organAbout the organ at First Baptist, Fayetteville…

The organ at First Baptist Church in Fayetteville, Arkansas was designed physically and tonally for the present Sanctuary by Casavant Frere, Ltd., of St-Hyacinthe, Quebec.  Construction of both the building and the organ began in 1959.  The Sanctuary was completed later that year at a cost of $500,000.  The organ, No. 2549, was constructed at a cost of $37,950.  Upon completion, it was shipped to Fayetteville, installed, voiced, and played at the first service in the new Sanctuary on February 14, 1960.
In 2006, the Sanctuary underwent a complete renovation.  During that project, Garland Pipe Organs Incorporated took the organ console to their facilities in Ft. Worth, Texas.  There the electro-pneumatic works were replaced with solid state, digital components.  The memory capability was expanded to thirty-two levels, doubling the number of pistons for each manual, tripling the number of general pistons for the entire organ, and adding MIDI capability.  Additionally, the console case was refinished to match the new woodwork in the room and the pedal board was returned to Casavant for full restoration.
Changes made to the pipe work were limited to two mixtures: the three rank mixture on the Great was expanded to four ranks, and the four rank mixture on the Swell was replaced.
The thirty-one ranks of pipes, numbering more than 2,000, are housed in three chambers:  the Great in a single large chamber on the north side of the choir loft.  The Swell and Choir, both under expression, are in two chambers, one above the other, on the south side of the loft.
We are blessed to have this wonderful resource as a part of our church’s heritage and as an aid in worship each week.

Soli Deo Gloria – To God alone be the glory!
